Roseburg 28
Axemen 27

10/20/06
Roseburg won a tense double-overtime game 28 to 27 when the officials took the Axemen's tying point-after off the scoreboard with the last of a fantastically long string of penalties, then ruled the re-kick no good in the final controversial call of the game.

The crowd scene at Roseburg was terrific, with a huge marching band, scads of Roseburg and Eugene Cheerleaders, and a large enthusiastic crowd. Unfortunately the hard play of the kids on both sides of the ball was tainted by the job done by the referees. How bad was it? The Roseburg chain gang even felt compelled to apologize to an Axemen cameraman for one unbelievable call at a critical juncture late in the game.

High School referees are local, and in a town like Roseburg with only one High School it is to be expected that most of the referees will have gone to Roseburg High, and likely played there. According to Roseburg fans this home team advantage has been taken to new level in Roseburg - the referees there are actually relatives of Roseburg coach Thurman Bell. Urban myth? Watch the game film.
