Friday, November 11, 2005 The playoff game was played on the turf at West Salem High School because of the poor condition of McNary's natural grass field. The McNary Celtics won the Valley League with an 8-1 league record, 9-1 overall. McNary featured the state's top running back, Kyley McCrae, who finished the regular season with 200 rushes for 1,803 yards, a 9.0 yard per carry average. McNary entered the game ranked 9'th in the state in the AP and Oregonlive.com polls. The Axemen defense rocked, keeping McCrae, who scored 17 touchdowns in the regular season, out of the end zone. The Celtics had averaged 25 points per game but could only put up 7 on the Axemen. Despite periods of heavy rain during the game the Axemen passing game was terrific, as Logan Beal went 20-26 with three touchdowns, 259 yards, and no interceptions. Daniel Hurwit had another big night with 10 receptions for for 128 yards and two touchdowns. Explosion plays for the Axemen included a 75 yard touchdown catch by Dan O'Brien, and a 63 yard fourth quarter touchdown catch by Hurwit. |
